My current favorite: Amex Hilton Surpass

Why I got it: This card came up at a time where I decided I was no longer going to stay at hotels solely based on the price. I saw that they were offering 130,000 points once you spend $2,000 in 3 months. Which for our family is an easy spend to reach.

I liked that they don’t charge you the annual fee the first year and the second year it is $95. Which is low.

Another big pro for us was that it counts Walmart as grocery spending, so we get 6x to points for it! A lot of cards don’t count Walmart or Target and we regularly buy groceries at Walmart.

It gives 6x points on gas and dining! most cards only give you 3x the points. The best part: 12x the points on every dollar you spend at a Hilton Property. So even if I used a few thousand points to reduce the charge for one of my stays I can make the points back pretty easily.

The card also comes with Gold status which gives you lots of perks like free breakfast. At the Hilton Guadalajara Midtown they had free breakfast AND free cocktail hour. The cocktail hour had a nice variety of food which we used as dinner :) so free breakfast and dinner!

This card also comes with priority pass access. Priority Pass is what gives you access to lounges around the world. Usually only higher annual free cards have them. I have priority pass through my Venture X card and that one has an annual fee of $395.
